Automotive Wiring Harness Connector Types: A B2B Buyer’s Guide
Automotive wiring harness connectors are the plug-and-socket interfaces that join harness circuits to each other and to vehicle ECUs, sensores, actuators and lamps. They fall into three structural families — wire-to-wire, wire-to-board and board-to-board — and are further divided into sealed (waterproof) and unsealed types. Choosing the right type is a current, environment and serviceability decision, not just a pin-count decision.
This guide explains the types, the anatomy of a modern automotive connector, and the selection criteria B2B buyers should lock down before releasing a harness drawing.
The Three Structural Families
| Family | Join What to What | Typical Automotive Use |
|---|---|---|
| Wire-to-wire (W2W) | Harness ↔ harness | Engine bay branches, door harness to main harness, trailer adapters |
| Wire-to-board (W2B) | Harness ↔ PCB | ECU, BCM, instrument cluster, sensor interface headers |
| Board-to-board (B2B) | PCB ↔ PCB (stack/mezzanine) | Inside ECUs and control modules (not part of the harness itself) |
Sealed vs Unsealed Connectors
Conectores selados add silicone wire seals, cavity plugs and a sealed matting face to reach roughly IP67-class protection — mandatory in the engine bay, underbody, doors and anywhere water, salt or dust reaches. Unsealed connectors are cheaper and used inside the cabin for protected electronics. A common cost mistake is specifying sealed connectors everywhere “just in case”; the seals add cost and insertion force for no benefit in dry zones.
Anatomy of a Modern Automotive Connector
- Housing (HSG): the plastic body; PA66/PBT/PPO grades chosen by temperature and fluid exposure.
- Terminais: brass/phosphor-bronze/copper-alloy contacts, plating tin or selective gold; crimped to the wire.
- TPA (Garantia de Posição Terminal): a secondary lock that keeps terminals fully seated — a missing TPA is a classic intermittent-connection root cause.
- CPA (Garantia de posição do conector): a secondary lock on the matting pair preventing accidental un-mating.
- Wire seals + cavity plugs: seal each wire entry and unused cavities in sealed systems.
- Locking lance / cantilever: the primary latch on the mating interface.
Connector Brands and Series You Will Meet in Harness Drawings
Most harness drawings reference series from major manufacturers — TE Connectivity, Aptivo (Delphi), Yazaki, Sumitomo, JST, Molex, JAE and Korean makers such as KY and KET. Factories either use genuine parts or brand-compatible housings and terminals; either way, the fitment, keying and terminal retention must be verified against the connector datasheet before production.
How to Choose: 6 Selection Criteria
- Atual & tensão: size the terminal, not just the housing — current rating follows the terminal and wire gauge.
- Temperature zone: engine-bay parts need 125°C-class materials; cabin can use 85–105°C classes.
- Ambiente: selado (IP67) for wet/dusty zones, unsealed inside the cabin.
- Pin count & pitch: balance pack density against assembly and service access.
- Retention & serviceability: TPA/CPA for vibration zones; consider how often the connector will be mated.
- Availability: long-lead connectors set the project schedule — confirm stock at RFQ stage.
